RULES
We here at Shattered Fates know that roleplaying supposed to be FUN, which is why we'll avoid as much red tape as possible. We believe in an environment that isn't restrictive, but freeform and wonderful. However we also believe that the community has to be on the same page to be conducive to this goal.
GENERAL
RESPECT, YO: this is pretty much a given, and is rule one on pretty much every roleplay site. Simply put, don't be a douche canoe. We're all here for the same purpose, to have fun, and if you try to prevent others from that goal then you're going to get a firm slap on the wrist with a rabid aardvark.
NONE OF THAT CLIQUE-Y BUSINESS: yeah, yeah, every site says this one as well. The problem is this is natural human behaviour, which makes it difficult to prevent. We're all going to have our group of friends that we're more willing to roleplay with than others. All we ask of you is to try and include people outside of that group now and then, make them feel welcome, wanted, appreciated. Who knows, maybe they'll become a friend of yours as well!
DON'T GET US FLAGGED: some of you enjoy your sexy time, and that's fine and dandy. However it can and will get us in trouble with Proboards if it happens on this site. even over private messaging. I know, it's creepy that big brother can access that stuff but it's a fact for now. So keep mature content to yourself. Go make a shared Google Docs document, or go to Skype, or text message each other. There are plenty of mediums for that stuff. That being said, adult themes are still welcome. If you want to imply sexy times, play out some blood and gore or whatever, just keep it all within reason.
PLAGIARISM WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE: we've all heard this one in school at some point. Turns out it still stands when it comes to creative properties. We won't flag you for quoting Shakespeare unsourced (though we do advise against, it makes for pretty lame roleplaying), but don't go stealing another person's ideas or character, even from other sites. If you think someone has done this to you, message a staff member and it will be investigated immediately!
- NO OOC DRAMA: just nope.
REGISTRATION
ONE CHARACTER, ONE ACCOUNT: this is pretty self-explanatory. Proboards can let you switch between accounts fairly easily these days so it shouldn't be a headache to do this. Also we really don't care what name you register by, as long as your display name shows the name of your character clearly.
TWO CHARACTERS PER PERSON: starting off, anyway. Hey, some of you really like to have your own platoon to play with, but we'd rather show us you can bear the load before diving in. If you want more characters, earn them: you can buy character slots in the shop with gold earned by posting and questing.
FACE CLAIMS: this is where the panfandom thing might get a bit muddled. For the sake of consistency, all face claims must be animanga. We will stretch this a bit to allow certain outliers, like digital paintings and such that are of sufficient quality. The main takeaway from this rule is that we don't want to see real life face claims floating about.
MORE ABOUT FACE CLAIMS: because of the nature of this site, there will be some conflicts. So, to avoid this, we're saying it out loud: face claims don't have to be unique. This might be a little counterintuitive so we'll try and explain it here. You can use a face claim from any universe as a character from any other universe: for instance, say you want to use Link as a faceclaim for your original character from Astrae. That's fine. You can even use Link as a face claim for a character from Gaia (Final Fantasy VII): that is also fine. The character doesn't have to be named Link and can have whatever traits you like (including the ability to form complete sentences). However, if the face claim you're using--in this case, Link--is from the setting they are originally from, it must be that canon character. So Link from Hyrule is Link.
We do discourage using face claims that have already been used. Also, duplicates aren't allowed--for instance, if there's already a Cloud FC from Hyrule, you can't have another Cloud FC from Hyrule. If you really want to use a face claim that's already in use in another reality, then should your two characters ever meet, treat it as an Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask situation. The characters look the same, but don't necessarily have to act the same. This is why we discourage using taken face claims even while the option is available, because it can get hairy.
- AVATARS: nice and simple, avatars have to be 200 x 300 in dimensions. Any other size will be forced into these dimensions and that can just look awkward.
ACTIVITY
POWER LEVELS OVER 9000: this happens on websites, so let's be clear about it. Most people want their character to be a badass. And that's okay. We get it. Badasses are cool. So are non-badasses. But being a badass does not mean they need to be overpowered. In fact, they aren't. No blowing up the planet, the cities, or large portions of the countryside. Razing a small no-name village or something is cool, but be real about it, guys.
FIGHTING: there isn't even a witty lead in to this. It kind of relates to the previous point, and we're going to be blunt about this one as well. Character versus character fighting isn't something that happens as often as you might think in a roleplaying setting, so we're making it a freeform system for the time being. If your fight turns into a match where you're both dodging everything each other throws, then you probably lead a pretty sad existence. We'd prefer if you went into character versus character fighting with an idea of the outcome. Don't come whining to us to moderate your dick waving contest because we will just lock the thread and be done with it. That being said, if you think your issue legitimate then feel free to contact us for mediation.
EVEN MORE ON FIGHTING: another one of those diverse topics with lots to talk about. Shattered Fates has an optional combat system available to the players. This was designed for and is balanced around PLAYER VERSUS ENVIRONMENT engagements, typically found in staff-run quests. This is entirely optional and if you want to freeform your PVE encounters, go ahead. However it is something you will need in order to participate in quests. Find out more at the combat link.
- WE GET THAT REAL LIFE COMES UP SOMETIMES: don't be afraid to tell us when things are happening in your life that will cause your activity to suffer. We get it, real life comes first. If you give us fair warning you won't be flagged for inactivity or anything like that. We do expect you to give us an update or something after a certain amount of time, however. If you're inactive for months at a time we can just assume you've fallen victim to a severe gambling addiction that has claimed all of your personal possessions and left you with only the option of selling your hair for small change to afford food, but we know where that change is going. We know.
- THERE IS NO NEED FOR PURPLE PROSE: we don't have a limit on the number of words in a post here. We do this primarily because there's no need to write two paragraphs describing the gentle blow of the wintery wind through her hair, like the hands of a forlorn lover and so on and so forth. The wind blew and it was cold. Got it. Just post what you think you need to post to get your point across. Of course we would like you write more than a few lines, and it's general courtesy to make an attempt to match your partner's length, but none of this is enforced. And if you like to go into detail about the senses, memories, whatever you might want to include in the post, go nuts. You do you, just don't feel pressured to not do you.
