Beyond the Veil
Port Town was lovely at this time of year. Of the centres beyond the Imperial City, Rwaht liked this the best. In so many smaller towns he cut such a singular figure that he inevitably became the object of suspicion, or even fear. He wondered if he cut his hair shorter would he perhaps engender less dislike.
Probably not. People found dislike wherever they looked for it. Even here.
The calls about a strange-looking Outlander, with "pointy ears," had fortunately led another Knight Captain to think of Rwaht. If Rwaht were the type, he would have taken offence, knowing that the only reason the other Captain had thought of him was because Rwaht's own appearance was so bizarre that he was frequently mistaken for an Outlander himself.
Of course the girl had arrived in the middle of town, and of course she'd been immediately swarmed with suspicion and dislike. Of course there'd been a scene. Of course she'd fled. Rwaht sighed. He was growing too used to this pattern. He only hoped today would end without violence. He'd specifically requested permission to go on this mission alone; no doubt this girl, whoever she was, already felt attacked. No need to bring a squadron of knights to her.
She'd fled the town, but the surrounding area was mostly plains. It wasn't hard to spot a lone figure in the distance, and Rwaht's long, quick strides made it easy to approach. He hadn't taken his sword. He just hoped his appearance alone wouldn't be interpreted as antagonistic.
"Excuse me." Rwaht called out. He didn't yell, but his voice had a way of carrying. "I was hoping we could talk."
